Sponsored Cranes The dream is, as many of you know, to travel to Hiroshima, Japan to fold the 1000th crane at the Children's Peace Monument. In pursuit of that, I started a GoFundMe page. With the assistance I received, plus the sale of some of my possessions, and a generous contribution from my brother, I have begun planning for that adventure. Those who contributed to the GoFundMe compaign will be listed as sponsors of cranes folded during travel to Hiroshima. This will, of course, culminate with the folding of the 1000th crane. Please take note that being listed as a sponsor does not entitle one to ownership of any part of the 1000 cranes - a flight of fancy project. I will prioritize travel activities and sponsors will be assigned based on the priority of a given activity and the amount donated. Those who donated higher amounts will be listed as crane sponsors for activities with higher priorities.

I recently updated this site to point to images on Google Drive rather than on my web server (GoDaddy made me move the image files). I apologize for any elements that do not behave correctly because of this. The Inspiration is Sadako Sasaki… a little girl, who, in 1955, at the age of 12, died from what her mother referred to as the atom bomb disease. Before her death, she folded 1000 paper cranes in the hope that she would be granted the gift of health from the gods. Her story transformed the paper crane into a symbol of hope and peace for innocent victims of war. The Goal… is to foster peace and civility via the art of origami by folding and blogging 1000 cranes in 1000 days. At Hiroshima, Japan… I web cast the folding, photographing, and blogging of the 1000th crane on the 1000th day of the project at the Children's Peace Memorial at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park at Hiroshima, Japan. I dedicated the final crane to Sadako Sasaki and other innocents who perish during war or from other violence. Only because of contributions made to me by family, fans, and followers of 1000 cranes - a flight of fancy did the dream to travel to Hiroshima become a reality. The Future: cranes4kidz… After the 1000 cranes - a flight of fancy project was completed, I founded a charity (cranes4kidz) dedicated to donating origami to hospitalized children and others. To date, I have delivered 4,400 cranes to various hospitals and support organizations. My goal is to deliver 9,000 origami forms to such caregivers.

An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane. I've folded many paper cranes since I learned the way of them in the 5th grade ( years, now). It never occured to me to count them. Over the years the craftsmanship has improved, to a point. I am ever amazed by their individuality, at how variations in paper, environment, and myself contribute to produce a crane subtly different from the preceding ones. I've collected a number of books on origami and always enjoy learning new forms; however, when permitted to follow their natural inclination, my hands always return to the form I learned first and love best, the crane. Of course, origami is an art appropriate to both the dilettante and the expert. The amazing variety of form offers the artist opportunties to revel in simplicity or aspire to complexity. You choose. I mean it: choose! Find an example and start, right now. You won't regret it. I never have. Nor have my wife, children, family or friends. They delight in them. So will yours. I recently contacted Ray, the fifth-grade schoolmate who taught me how to make cranes and, at that time, made me promise to keep its way secret. He remembered me, but he did not remember having me make that promise. He happily released me from it. Yay!! I'll now point you to my pattern for an origami crane…

about… Upon arriving in Japan, I will travel by bullet train from Tokyo to Hiroshima. This will afford me the opportunity to see the country side and enjoy (maybe) a bento box. about… The Hotel Sunroute Hiroshima is a short walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Children's Peace Monument. I had originally planned to take up residence at a capsule hotel, but the heart attack and its aftermath inspired a new choice. I thought it might be a good idea to stay at a hotel with a 24-hour front desk and a concierge. Fortunaltey, the proximity of the Hotel Sunroute Hiroshima to monuments of interests is as good, or better, than my original selection.

about… Hiroshima Castle - Wikipedia Hiroshima Castle (広島城 Hiroshima-jō?), sometimes called Carp Castle (鯉城 Rijō?), was a castle in Hiroshima, Japan that was the home of the daimyō (feudal lord) of the Hiroshima han (fief). The castle was constructed in the 1590s, but was destroyed by the atomic bombing on August 6 1945. It was rebuilt in 1958, a replica of the original that now serves as a museum of Hiroshima's history prior to World War II.

about… I discovered a video game from Japan called "Flip the table (in anger)." It's about a father at dinner with his family that has a sort of mental breakdown as his family and the restaurant staff give him an increasingly more difficult time. about… A-bomb Dome The A-Bomb Dome is a symbol of peace which most people have at least seen at one time in a picture. The building, which was designed by a Czech architect in 1915, had been used as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. Because the blast came from almost directly above the building, it was not completely destroyed. The majority of the blast damage to the city was caused by the lateral shock wave that spread out from the hypocentre of the bomb's detonation. Atomic Bomb Dome - Dark History After the war it was eventually decided (after some initial controversy) to preserve the A-Bomb Dome for posterity as a reminder of the horrors of the bombing. Comprehensive restoration work was necessary on two occasions – in 1967 and in 1989/90. In 1996 the A-Bomb Dome was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
