If you have diabetes and are planning to travel, the following might be of use as you plan. The information in this list was condensed from Michelle Lord's diabetes vlog. Please visit her youtube page to express your thanks.

The Basics

  1. Two (2) Vials of Insulin for seven days. Chill the insulin based on your travel time. Put the insulin in a refrigerator when you reach your destination.
  2. If you use an insulin pump, ten (10) syringes for a week in case the pump malfunctions.

Blood Sugar Monitoring

  1. Blood Sugar Monitors: Take the CGM, a regular meter, and a backup meter. Be sure to take your charger(s) and/or compatible cable(s).
  2. Spare lancets
  3. Plenty of alcohol Swaps
  4. 150 test strips for seven days. Of course, that’s a lot, but better safe than sorry.
  5. If you use a Continuous Glucose Monitor, take it and its charger. Also, take enough sites for the required number of changes × 2.
  6. Three (3) batteries for the meters / monitors, as appropriate.

Pump Supplies

  1. Spare Pump. If you do not have one, contact your pump’s manufacture to inquire about renting a backup pump.
  2. Several batteries for your insulin pump.
  3. Infusion Sets and Reservoirs: number of site changes × 2. For 7 days, the site may be changed 2 to 3 times. 2.5 × 2 = 5, so take 5 sites/reservoirs.

Extras

  1. Glucagon for emergency lows.
  2. Ketone sticks
  3. Tape for covering/sealing the sites (CGM / infusion site)
  4. Glucose tablets: three tubes. Pack a jug to refill the tubes in your suitcase.
  5. Travel Letters from your endocrinologist detailing the diabetes supplies and equipment with which you are traveling. Such letters may help you pass through security more smoothly.
  6. Health Insurance Card. It is important to call your insurance provider prior to any treatment as failure to do so may result in a lack of coverage (i.e. you will have to pay).
